Normal Skin

The skin shows no anomalies or visible pores and has an even texture. When assessed by touch, this skin type has no irregularities, dryness, blemishes or flaws. It is smooth, with a uniform appearance.

Combination Skin

Certain areas of your face may sometimes appear dry, especially in winter, while others, particularly the T-zone, are somewhat oily every day.

Oily Skin

The skin appears shiny. The pores are dilated and visible. There may be blemishes or other imperfections.

Dry skin

Dry skin is rough, dull and prone to tightness, redness, scaly patches and stretch marks. It suffers from the cold more than usual in wintertime, which can lead to chapping. Some people only have dry skin in winter, with normal skin the rest of the year.

Dehydrated skin

Moisturising is essential to skin’s well-being, as it preserves its mechanical properties. Skin’s smooth appearance depends on the water content of its upper layer. The human body is approximately 60-65% water and evaporation regulates water balance, influenced by humidity, the amount of water in the cells and the hydrolipid film. Sagging skin, a major sign of ageing, is accentuated by dehydration. Maintaining optimal moisture in the skin is therefore crucial to preserving skin’s firmness.

Skin ageing

Skin changes visibly with age, showing such signs as reduced thickness, sagging, diminished radiance, decreased moisture due to reduced hyaluronic acid, dark spots and volume loss. Male skin usually shows signs of ageing later, but once the process begins, more pronounced wrinkles appear. Wrinkles are caused by two mechanisms: biological (cellular ageing, oxidation or glycation of collagen and elastin fibres) and mechanical (continuous contraction of facial muscles - 30,000 times a day). Starting around the age of 30, wrinkles become permanent on the forehead, between the eyebrows and around the nose. Thinning lips also leads to the appearance of wrinkles.

Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin reacts strongly to climatic factors, such as wind, sun, cold air, dry air, temperature variations, pollution, etc. Characteristics of sensitive skin are: tingling, prickling, itching, excessive warmth or burning, naturally thin or very dry skin (hereditary), rather fair complexion, redness and irritation, reaction to temperature changes, rosaceous patches. Not to be confused with sensitised skin: overexposed to the sun’s rays, oily after an aggressive skin treatment, having undergone a dermatological procedure, sensitive due to stress or taking certain medications.

Impurities

Excess sebum is directly tied to hormone production. It can cause acne, blackheads or seborrheic dermatitis. The ideal product should have the following targeted actions:

Dark spots

The color of the skin, result of melanogenesis, is determined by melanins, acting as protection against UV rays. Pigment spots indicate a dysfunction of the pigmentation system, accentuated with age. Contributing melanogenesis upstream is crucial to alleviate pigment clusters, also called skin spots.

Dull skin

To the touch, the skin feels rough and uneven. It lacks suppleness and softness. After cleansing, there is a feeling of tightness, especially on the cheeks. The skin is dry, with flakiness on the cheekbones and nose, and fine lines appearing on the forehead, around the eyes, or on the cheeks.

THE EYE CONTOUR

The skin around the eye is 4 to 5 times thinner than the skin on the rest of the face and therefore shows signs of ageing very early.

First wrinkles

Wrinkles form first on the forehead, along the nasolabial folds and around lips and eyes, where muscles contract many times each day. Crow’s feet, located at the outer corners of the eyes, are the first expression lines to appear.

Sagging eyelids

The skin tissue around the eyes suffers from poor collagen supply and therefore sags due to lack of support. Collagen rigidifies with age. The skin loses suppleness and density. Wrinkles deepen and eyelids sag.

Dark circles

The term ‘dark circles’ refers to the colouring of the skin beneath the eye, in tones ranging from yellow to black. The appearance of dark circles is often caused by slowed skin microcirculation as a result of ageing, fatigue or stress.

Puffiness

Undereye puffiness, sometimes called bags, is caused by an accumulation of water, fats or metabolic waste in the tissues. This phenomenon, the result of age and heredity, occurs most frequently at night.

The causes of undereye puffiness and dark circles

The following factors play a role in the development of undereye puffiness and/or dark circles:

  • Lack of sleep

The Delicate Skin of the Neck and Décolleté

This area of skin, the thinnest on the entire body, is devoid of sebaceous glands and is vulnerable becoming dehydrated. With time, UV exposure diminishes the skin’s elasticity, inducing oxidative stress that causes fibres such as elastin and collagen to deteriorate. Increased vascularisation generated by UV and pollution exposure leads to redness and changes in colour, whereas mechanical stress can cause fine lines. The neck and décolleté are prone to premature wrinkling, sagging skin, pigmentation variations and dehydration.
