Mitochondria: Your Allies for Energised Skin
What are mitochondria?
The mitochondrion (pl. mitochondria) is a cellular organelle that is vital to the body’s ability to function as it should. Each is a veritable energy factory within the cell (in yellow in the photo of the cell) and plays a key role in many cellular and molecular functions. Each cell contains hundreds – even thousands – of mitochondria that produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the essential energy source for all cells in the body.
Mitochondria function is directly linked to ageing, particularly oxidative stress, as well as to longevity. Decreased mitochondrial activity is associated with the ageing process and reduced longevity (Lopez-Otin et al., 2016, Cell).
The role of mitochondria in your skin’s health
Over time, mitochondrial activity evolves and adapts to environmental stressors (sun exposure, pollution), life conditions and factors (stress, lifestyle pace, diet) and natural ageing.
Studies have shown, however, that when mitochondrial activity is impaired, signs of skin ageing appear earlier (Sreedhar et al., 2020, Cell Death and Disease).
To ensure skin remains healthy and glowing, skin cells need to have mitochondria that are functioning optimally, so as to produce sufficient energy.
Our skincare products for flourishing mitochondria
When mitochondria are stimulated, they increase their production of cellular energy. This energy helps your skin fight the visible signs of ageing, such as wrinkles and sagging. Our skincare products sustain and stimulate mitochondrial activity to preserve your skin’s youthful vitality.
Generating 20% more energy
CytoPep™ Cellular Extracts are the signature ingredient in our creams, serums and concentrates, a proprietary blend of peptides and structural skin proteins. When reaching a concentration of Cellular Index 6 (CI6) on our scale of 1 to 6, our extracts stimulate mitochondria, increasing their energy production by 20%.
